Sustain was created by re-photographing the final sequence of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey with a stills camera. The use of a long exposure has the effect of collapsing the movie’s frames onto a single image plane, thereby compressing time and narrative. The title recalls the musical term for a prolonged tone and the consequent piling of notes on top of one other. The work also makes reference to Hiroshi Sugimoto’s Theatres series in which the projection of an entire motion picture was reduced to a single white, rectangular light.
